Five Card stud goes back a long way in the annals of poker and remains very popular even today. Stud games include many varieties such as spread limit, fixed limit, no limit, pot limit and mixtures of all the above. Do not be misled by its relative simplicity, winning strategies demand more than a surface understanding of betting, positions and card combinations. As with any form of poker, the successful players will vary their strategies and tactics and will calculate odds at each move.
While not reaching the level of popularity of Texas Hold'em, which is at the top of the popularity scale, 5-card stud nonetheless has gathered a substantial following in cash and tournament play. While not yet a prominent factor in major tournaments, you will find it popular among cash and traditional players and even in tournaments devoted exclusively to the game.
Playing the Game of 5-Card Stud Poker
The game begins with a deal to each player of one card face down and one card face up. Some rules of some games may demand that the holder of the lowest visible card antes up (ties resolved by the size of the ante), followed by a betting round. After completion of this first round of bets, another card is dealt face up and he who has the highest up-card takes the first action. Another betting round ensues, and then another two rounds of cards are dealt The player with the highest scoring hand at the end of the game triumphs. All cards in each players hands are revealed at the end to determine the highest scoring, winning hand.
Ideal Strategies in 5 Card Stud
Other draw games may seem less straightforward than stud, but ultimately, the game is won by pairs and high card combinations and not by straights and flushes. It is well nigh impossible to draw straights and flushes in only five cards. The object, then, is to draw to pairs or higher while restraining your bets toward draw hands with their low odds. It is a good idea, though, to bet towards dual draws should the opportunity present itself to give you a straight or a different and better hand via the bluff.
The first rounds of the game will find most players betting towards pair hands, high cards or a mix of the two. Observe closely the hands of your fellow players and go for the pot only if you don't draw an ace or a pair in your first three draws. Stud is a rather conservative game and does give you many chances to bluff, and revealing your bluffs can add to your ability to create even more effective semi-bluffs and/or aggressive strategies when you do draw into a strong hand.
The very directness of 5-card stud poker attracts many a traditional player because of the easier reading of opponents tells and signing. Because of this, you must pay strict attention to the hands that your opponents are folding on and learn volumes for reference in subsequent rounds. The better you are at this insightful technique, the more money you will walk away with.
