Poker is rich in aesthetics. The enormously popular game developed over the centuries into an exquisite form of intellectual art. It has accumulated not only distinctive rules, but long-standing traditions. A genuine poker player is there not merely to spend some time away from his work or family. For the new poker club owner, since the game has an illustrious history, this aspect of it should be enhanced in the design. Something akin to historical tradition but with some modern touches to keep it from getting stuffy. Avoid any notion of a "theme" club...way to Disneyesque. Pay attention to factors like noise, color, and light pollution - all are distracting for the player whether amateur or professional. Everything should be slightly muted, exuberance is not what you are after.

Whether you are the manager or whether you hire a professional, make sure that the place is run with reliability and responsibility at all times and that any dispute or uncertainty are immediately resolved to the frequenters' satisfaction. The manager has to be an experienced poker connoisseur him/her self, not an ignorant business manager, while the dealers must be the best available, preferably pleasant-looking, snubbing no newcomer.

The furnishings should be purchased not only for style but for durability as well. Plan for a lounge area where players can take five and relax between rounds, converse with fellow players, enjoy a drink and a good cigar. Add comfortable air conditioning, a comfortable, well-stocked bar with a professional, hospitable bartender. No gentlemen or gentlewoman poker connoisseur will tolerate a long game without good liquor and good smokes.

Everyone knows that body language can disclose personality traits and intentions. On observation, you can tell if some one is bent on causing you pleasure or pain. This comes in very handy in a poker game.

Observing the body language of poker players, one can detect their "tells." A tell is simply a repetitive signal given by a player disclosing his current hand and motives. It is important to relate the body language reading to the total environment with the same gestures being made over and over in distinct situations. Gestures such as playing with chips before a move to frighten you to check will reveal the opponents hand (even partially) to the table as well as his thought patterns.

Reading of the opponents' hands and minds is not magic. Body language may appear to have nothing to do with actual poker, but pros rely heavily on it and any aspiring player should acquire at least the basics of it: it is fun (especially when you finally become good at it) and it earns you cash. Not least importantly, it makes you more aware of this aspect of the game. Not only that you learn to read other people's tells, you become aware of your own - and everybody has them - and thus learn to conceal them (sometimes, when it is possibly, by removing them altogether; sometimes by converting them into something else, so that they mislead any other body-readers at the table).

Don't underestimate the potential of reading body language. The best players always use what seems least likely. They perfect their directly card-related skills, but they also rely on the entire environment in which the specific poker table is situated. Advanced body-reading is mostly intuitive, but a good grasp on it immediately puts a player at the top among those players who do not appear to be the greatest logicians, yet still lead. Such players can tell their opponents hands and predict moves from how they raise and lower their shoulders or from how they look at things, like clocks on the walls.

Though there is no visible body language online, online tells are a real, detectable thing. You can't read a players icon, but you can read the speed with which they make specific decisions. Online games are games of buttons: you bet, call, raise by clicking the appropriate choice. Now, the time it takes you to decide is what your opponents notice. They may notice that your moves are automatic or that you are deliberating where there seems no room for doubt.

Keep this in context with the opponents typical game traits. They have not given the appearance of being slow-witted, they are attempting to portray to you that their cards are good, but need some time to think before clicking on "check" to lead you to believe that they are keeping the good cards while a later, greater bank amasses. What they are hoping that you will do is "check" also so they can delay the play of their lousy cards.

With practiced observation you will be able to discern between natural pauses and bluffs. You are ready now to learn in detail the pause-patterns of specific opponents.

Occasionally you will be listening to players lamenting a lousy run of hands with such words as their opponents were forever raising on the preflop or answering before the river, or some such moaning and groaning. These complainers are probably new to the game and are not yet onto the fact that they must observe their opponents and sort them into categories. They probably don't even know that there ARE categories.

The failure to understand this phenomenon contributes to inflexibility and when up against an unknown strategy, the player will find himself at sea. He is not prepared and therefore will not be able to adapt quickly enough if at all.

The more experienced you are the better you understand that poker is a game in which you can never possess precise information, where you have to improvise, use your instincts as well as precisely calculated tactics, and where you must be able to adapt quickly to any opponent's tricks and quirks.

With this in mind, you know that no player can ever be totally prepared and it will take certainly more than one strategy and none of them will be without risk. If this is all you remember, you will be much more prepared to face the challenges that lie ahead without fear or utter paralysis.

The next step is to familiarize yourself with the classic basic types of poker players. Maniacs, tight, and loose players each require that you adopt a distinctive attitude. In principle, any deviation by your opponents from the optimal game means gain: a good player is only glad to play against fish and maniacs. Occasionally you might lose against such opponents, even lose a lot during especially unlucky sessions, but in the long run you should always be able to win significantly more than you lose against such players.

Loose opponents: this should actually be one of the most pleasant and profitable types for you to deal with. These players play many more hands than they ought to and insist on answering with bad draws and weak pairs. The seldom bluff and do not protect their good hands properly. Their parameters are usually: VPIP over 40%, PFR under 10%, AF under 1.5 WSD over 40%.

Tight opponents: perhaps not the most profitable, but fairly easy pray. They play only the best hands, for the most part very aggressively. Their main weakness is that they are easily read and that they don't protect blinds. Their parameters are usually VPIP under 15%, PFR under 10%.

By far the most unpredictable types are the aggressive-loose player and the maniacs. With a little bit of a smile from lady luck, however, these can offer up some major earnings for you, but be prepared to take some losses along the way. The maniac will play a card no matter what, and will avidly bet, raise and re-raise. Some of their opponents are driven nuts by this and shun the maniac. Don't you be one of them - stick with the maniacs, they are not difficult to overcome. You need a hand with average cards and the tenacity to remain in the game until the bitter end (not bitter for you if you have any skill at all). In poker parlance, their parameters are likely to be VPIP over 50%, PFR over 20%, and AF over 2.5.

Last, but certainly not least of the types is the competent player. This one is not an easy profit maker for you. They are the tight aggressive players who know what they are doing. As with all strong opponents, you will have to play your best game and hope for some pure old-fashioned luck to pull you through.

The truly ambitious poker player enjoys acquiring knowledge independently and discovers learning from his own observations rather than depending on those of others. He takes his own observations and turns them into a unique method. Players of talent will use their imagination and creativity to conceive their own style of poker to put themselves way beyond the reach of not only amateurs but also the most competent of experts.

That is why no explanation of general dos and don'ts will ever suffice to make a true player and which is why true players will always remain a mystery. Because the true player's strategy has an undiscoverable core which is of his or her own invention, the diligent amateur will never know how to become as great as his latest idol.

There is only one solution to this problem and one which talented players independently intuit: one has to commit not merely to intense mechanical practice but to intense re-imagining of mechanically acquired knowledge. One must develop not only observational but also imaginative skill in order to prevent amateurs from predicting your decisions. Independence and intuition, in fact, imply a certain degree of ignorance. There is, however, a crucial difference between common ignorance and imaginative independence: common ignorance is complacent and not meant as a means of self improvement; but when you rely on your personal intuition, you know precisely what you ignore and why and you are always working to improve in a specific known direction.

The intuitive player does not depend on reading opponent's insights and methods exclusively. He will make his own selections in any given circumstance. This is not the wannabe expert poring over volumes of literature authored by the best poker players in the business. This is the intuitive player who, while giving the poker intellectuals their due, will be at the table cleaning their clocks.

You may not be aware that poker is not a single game but a complex array of many related games. The games are related, but the strategies required and the experience offered by some poker games may be vastly different from other, perhaps more familiar types of poker.

If you stick to the more familiar versions of the poker game and do pretty well and step out of your comfort zone occasionally, you will discover that the rules have suddenly changed on you and you have no idea how to proceed. The novice soon understands that to play with any consistent chance of coming out ahead, he will have to target one game to specialize in and grow with. How can such a decision be made?

Every poker player is there to win the game and the bank. But for a beginner, to decide which poker game is the most profitable is practically impossible. Every one of the games is complex, allowing plenty of possibilities. None are decidedly more profitable than others.

What decides the overall profit in any poker game is how well you combine your goals, your strategies, and the unique possibilities of the specific game. That is, one must simply decide which game one is best at (at least as far as earning money is concerned) and work to continually improve oneself. Other games may be played occasionally, but mostly as refreshment. Your best profits will usually be at the one or two poker types you have been specializing in for a long time.

This answer is not going to appeal to everyone. To the novice player, some games seem to offer more possibilities of high earnings than others and so stay with those games until luck finally strikes. You can hang around for that lucky streak if that is what you want from the game, but you will sacrifice the potential of regular earnings.

There is one belief usually held by newcomers that if they get to know the game of no-limit reasonably well they stand to gain greater profits than by playing a solid game of limit poker. It seems to them that by betting large sums even though losses are inevitable, those large bets will turn a net profit in the long run.

Now if you are after consistent profitability, you must delve more deeply into the question. Gain is a result of managing your cards well in the face of a constantly increasing bank. The size of the bank, though is not determinant of how you manage your cards. Good card management is determined by the rules of the game. Each hand needs particular skills to make that bank grow to its highest profitability before you collect it. As you are now aware, successful strategies differ greatly between the game versions.

This means that if you choose a game only by how profitable it looks to you, you are likely to end up a mediocre player at best, without the potential to improve beyond your opponents, and thus without the potential to win much more than them.

The poker game that relies on creating an image is in another dimension than rule or tactic-based poker, although all of these are essential to a good game. Image concerns everyone at the table and is the total of all you know about your opponents and all you let them know about you. Image-making will sometimes cause you to make moves which your opponents perceive as odd or ill-conceived.

Whatever it is you do or don't do at the table produces an image for your opponents to observe and analyze. There are players who attempt to project nothing. Everyone at the table must play the cards dealt him. An alternative playing style is to make a big show of activity to disorient and confuse opponents thereby obscuring your method of play.

Bluffing is usually undertaken to increase your advantage (and earnings) for a few bets. Image creation, on the other hand, will probably diminish the advantage of a few of your bluff-style bets, but will enhance your advantage in the long run. An example: make a few weak moves in a certain circumstance. You will probably lose this round, but in the same situation in the future, when your hand is strong and your play is good, your competent, unbelieving opponents will think you once again have a weaker hand, while the true experts cannot fathom what you are doing at all. Just a seemingly idiotic play like this has long lasting effects on your opponents and give your strong hands much more value.

Chess is known for its image-based strategies. The players whose strengths are either well known or unknown make credible bad moves or what appear to be oddly ridiculous moves. They will sacrifice pieces, fail to defend their positions or to take positions. This is disorientation by deliberately making bad moves. This player will then use his "bad" strategy to make a quick swoop or attack a weak point that was previously not in his line of focus.

The main idea is the same in both games: you sacrifice current advantage in order to seize greater advantage later in the game. Instead of playing every concrete hand the best way, you envision less palpable but likely future possibilities. The move seems for the present to have put you at a disadvantage, but the game allows you to recover later and when you are ready to recover with a vengeance, your image will be your primary means.

You need to learn to project a variety of images and use the image that best befits a given situation. You will also learn which "dumb" moves to use to fake out your opponents to best achieve whichever goal you have in mind. You may want to use your image to disorient only with regard to a particular skill set. There will be times when you want them to see you as a weak player, or at least wonder if you are or not, or to think you are just a big bluff artist.

It is probably better to generate the image at the outset of the game, when the bank is still small. Otherwise, a few consecutive "bad" moves with a big bank may cost more than the eventual win.

The language of poker can seem like a foreign one, an English dialect unheard anywhere else but at a poker table. To the uninitiated, it seems totally undecipherable, but listen carefully and learn a few of the terms set out here, and you will begin to understand the jargon.

No matter what the street (how many cards have been dealt = street) a player makes any one of the following decisions: to fold, to answer a bet, and to call. If a player responds to an obligatory bet on a preflop, that bet is known as a limp or limp in, the player himself is referred to as the limper. Going all-in, a player is usually seen pushing a stack of chips towards the center of the table. The term "push" implies an all-in bet. If the game continues after a player's all-in, the bank is split into the main pot and the side pot.

If at the conclusion of the game (i.e., the river) two or more players make equal bets, a showdown occurs. Whichever player has the strongest 5-card combination, or hand, wins. A hand is rated thusly, from highest to lowest: royal flush, straight flush, quad (four of a kind), full-house, flush, straight, three of a kind (aka a set should a third card be added to your pocket pair), two pairs, aka a doper, the basic pair (an overpair refers to a pair being stronger than the strongest single card on the table); in a flop, the cards are considered top, middle, and small pairs and are rated accordingly; and lastly (and most lowly) comes the high card. If this high card is higher than any card on the table it is referred to as an overcard. Bear with me, it's almost over....

Strong hands are monsters, generally ranging from full-house up. The nuts is the strongest current hand. So he who holds the strongest current hand has the nuts.

Finally, in the event of even hands, the difference is distinguished by the highest rated card of the five best cards, but not one that is part of any of the above rated combinations. And that card is referred to as the kicker. When players have the same combinations, you have what is known as a split bank.
